The Ès-SENS Ferrières team
Initially consisting of Constance (left) and Julia (right), the Ès-SENS Ferrières team has grown larger with the Victor (middle) since the 2017 edition!
These three very dynamic young people have all been presidents of the École Normale Supérieure wine tasting club, the ŒNS (Julia and Constance in 2015-2016, year of the foundation of the Coupe Ès-SENS Ferrières, Victor in 2017-2018).
ŒNS, founded more than twenty years ago by students of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, is a tasting society open to all students of the school, be they beginners or connoisseurs.
The society organizes weekly tasting sessions from October to June, making its subscribers discover all the diversity of the world of wine: from different regions in France – Alsace, Champagne, Bordeaux, the Southwest, Burgundy, the Rhone Valley, Provence, Languedoc, Corsica, the Loire Valley, Jura... – to other countries – South America, Italy, Spain, South Africa, Portugal... – and even spirits - whisky, rum, cognac, chartreuse, sake...
The ŒNS society also organizes several exceptional events. Each year, it arranges a trip for a group of thirty of its members in a French wine region. In 2015, Champagne was in the spotlight, in 2016 it was Burgundy, Alsace in 2017, and why not the Northern Rhone in 2018?
In 2015, the club again innovated by inviting not one, nor even two or three, but 10 winemakers, all from the same association Bordeaux Oxygène. This invitation was an opportunity to organize for the first time masterclasses open to all our students "discovering the terroirs from Bordeaux ". In this new exceptional session, at the end of the year, in December 2016, Manuel Peyrondet, godfather of the Coupe Ès-SENS Ferrières, hosted a masterclass on the theme of "pinot in all its forms", bringing together no less than 18 wines, from Alsace to New Zealand, through Burgundy or Champagne. This masterclass has been a great success, welcoming 80 students from 12 different French schools and universities!
In the same spirit of innovation, ŒNS is also the founder of the Coupe ESSENS-Ferrières, which became Coupe Ès-SENS Ferrières starting in 2018.
In parallel with the activities of the club, student-organizers also participate in amateur blind tasting competitions. This is an opportunity to test their œnological knowledge and to compete with the other œnology clubs of International Grandes Ecoles and Universités.
